Communications Today, 11-Jul-2002 A new report from industry analysts In-Stat/MDR predicts that, in part goaded by the recently published FS-VDSL specification, telephone companies are about to begin increasing their presence in the video delivery market. At the same time, however, economic conditions are expected to keep growth in the field relatively slow for the next few years. The report, "Telco Video Delivery on the Brink," claims there are about 100,000 subscribers to telephone company video services, and expects this to grow to about 1 million subs by 2004. In the 2005-2006 timeframe, the firm expects this "leisurely" pace to pick up a bit based largely on expectations of a long-term recovery in capital expenditure budgets. While much of the early development has taken place in the Americas, the firm expects Europe to take the lead - which makes sense given the stronger presence of DSL in more densely populated European markets as opposed to the cable stronghold of North America. With appropriate timing, ECI Telecom [ECIL] unit Inovia Telecoms is demonstrating a digital video over DSL system at a conference devoted to the subject in Barcelona. The expansion to Inovia's randomly capitalized Hi-FOCuS product line is designed to offer video delivery options ranging from interactive and broadcast television to video on demand.
